Emily Black, Scottsdale Dance Photographer

I'm a lifelong fine artist who dabbled in everything from painting to sculpture to fiber arts, while treating photography like a hobby.  When I moved back to the U.S. from England in 2016, I decided it was time to jump into life—and photography—with both feet!  I started a portrait photography business, but my best friend kept pestering me to photograph her dancer daughter.  I was picturing lining up a bunch of five-year-olds in their recital costumes!  That's not what we Artistes do!

WELL, MY BEST FRIEND IS VERY PERSISTENT.

Not only did I give in, I fell in love.  The collaboration with other artists, the technical skill required, the energy of a shoot—I love it all.

When I moved to Scottsdale in 2017, I decided to focus on dance photography, rather than portraits.  That has attracted yogis, personal trainers, marathon runners, and all sorts of (mostly) female athletes who love my ability to show strength and grace simultaneously.

I now live and work in Scottsdale but travel regularly for shoots.  I get home to Mississippi, where I grew up, when I can.  I love all animals, Scrabble, sewing, mystery novels, and hiking in the desert (or most anywhere!).  I have two nieces that I adore and the most amazing friends in the world.
